CHEAP FLIGHTS TO BUSINESS SUCCESS – PART 6

This is going to be a 2-part session, where we will discuss the next 2 reasons why you may not want to go into or grow a business; having to deal with raw material availability, and concerns of getting it right all the time.
Raw Material Availability (Especially when it comes to Production)

For me, how I tackle this in anything I want to do is to be sure that I can acquire materials and tools required to produce what I want to produce “Locally”. I do this even before I decide to go into the business. The materials must be readily available locally so I don’t have to go through the stress and inconvenience of importing anything, and having to worry about foreign exchange issues, customs, etc. I may use imported tools (imported by some other company or person... not me), but my raw materials for production... they must be produced in my country. This way, I’m always sure of getting them for what I need to produce at any time of the year. For instance, agro-processing is very lucrative in Nigeria (no matter what you are processing, actually) because that’s what Nigerians do easily and know... extraction! Taking what we extract and sell, and converting it to something different, or even repackaging is good business here (or in a place like this).
However, if you feel you must import your raw materials and tools for production, it’s ok. To each his own. Many people often make that decision because they feel that nothing good can come out of Nigerian machines, or Nigerian products (even the ones farmed from Mother Earth), but, I’ll tell you today that there are very many outstanding fabricators and engineers in Nigeria that can build and replicate almost any machine you need for your small or medium scale business. You have the idea, or the original, they build it. And as far as other inputs go (like agricultural produce, for instance), I’m pretty sure that almost all we grow here is very much organic; and you know you can’t go wrong with organic produce.
Getting it Right

This is not always easy, but just take your time until you do. Like I did with the bag-business, I looked online for current trends, studied other people’s designs and found ways to simulate them, or make them my own through one or two changes here and there that suited my style, or the most demanded styles here. I included accessories I saw them use (which I could get around here or create myself). Sure, you can borrow ideas. Even now I’m into agro-processing, I still have to look up to those before me in that production aspect and see how they do it. But what really works for me is testing my formulations/products on myself... for a period of time. If they work for a lazy DIY chic like me who likes things simple and easy, then it can work for anyone (I hope...! Hahaha). And that’s the way I test them until I get them right. But to avoid hurting myself, or course, I try to learn from other people’s mistakes first and improve on their own processes to see if I will get better results. Then I leave my formulations out for a while to check shelf life, reactions to the elements, etc.
However, when it comes to other forms of business, getting it right could involve issues like just giving that service right to satisfy the customer. Well..., it’s the same thing; nothing textbook. Just learn from those before you.
YouTube, Google... online generally... really helps me whenever I want to embark on something. Sometimes though, I didn’t find reliable info online (or any info at all), so in order to save me the troubles of trials and errors, I simply resorted to alternatives of my formulation ingredients that had info about them online, and which I could acquire locally.
The lesson here..? If at first you don’t succeed, try... try ... try... again the same way, or another way. And try not to hurt yourself while you’re at it..!
So..., that’s my view, from my experiences, concerning issues on raw material availability and getting it right, my dear friends. If you would like to get some insight into how to handle the next concerns which you might have (Sustaining it (whether it’s a product or process of production/delivery, or the business as a whole), and Selling/marketing the product/service), please, move unto Part 7 of Cheap Flights to Business Success.
